The brass wire allows fast and effective cleaning of the soldering tip without thermal shock as in the case of a classic "wet" sponge. The sharp edges of the brass sponges scrape off oxidized solder, but do not damage the solder tip plating. The sponge thus speeds up the cleaning process while helping to extend the life of the soldering tip.
